Launching a new hub

We just launched a new hub for the family with pivots to content from Rhonda and each of the two boys. I’ll still be posting on this site but felt that a new domain and site would be helpful.

Manuals: Going the way of the Dodo?

Ever wonder when (or if) manual transmission cars will fade into the past? I’ve owned more manuals than automatics, seeking them out in at least two new car purchases.

  • 1994 Volkswagen Jetta
  • 1997 Ford Escort
  • 2002 Nissan Altima
  • 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit

I love them, personally, yet can see knowledge of driving stick fading in society as a whole. Thinking the days of a manual in a small hatchback or four door sedan are fading…

The missile battery in the back yard

I am a child, largely, of the Post-Cold War world. Born in 1980, I did not live under the immediate threat of Soviet Bombers in the 50s and 60s, the Cuban Missile Crisis or the Vietnam War. I became largely aware of the broader world as the Iron Curtain crumbled, the Wall tumbled in the middle of the night and Russia produced a President standing on a tank, facing down a coup.

A recent discovery (for me) is the massive, Nike Missile program of the 1950s and 60s. The installation of hundreds of sites around the United States, protecting population, industrial and strategic centers is completely staggering. Everyday citizens went about their lives at the height of the Cold War, in places like Dayton, Norfolk and Chicago under the blanket of surface to air missile batteries.

Equally impressive is the painstaking precision that modern enthusiasts have gone to to catalog these sites, complete with GPS coordinates and present conditions of the structures. I am inspired to hunt down some of these sites in my back yard.

Cooking up a storm in the summer heat

We’ve been cooking up a storm in the household, in spite of the oppressive heat wave outside.

A few of the recent hits we have tried out in recent weeks:

  • Tilapia Piccata with Snap Peas – Very straightforward and slick use of the grill. Balanced flavor but choose the white wine carefully.
  • Buffalo Chicken Twice Cooked Potatoes – Absolutely killer, don’t be shy with the buffalo sauce when preparing.
  • Grandma’s Applesauce Meatballs – Perhaps better suited to a cold winter or fall night this meal turned out really fantastic when paired with buttered egg noodles.
  • Blackberry Buttermilk Cake – My new favorite desert and discovered the need to plus up the amount of blackberries. Making great use of the spring form pan this summer (cheesecakes, torts, etc) but this is a killer cake and a great summer ender.

A Father/Son Spring Break Road Trip

After gathering special dispensation from the better half David and I set off this past week for a father / son road trip to Florida (NASA Kennedy, Disney World). Six days, and 1,600 miles later, we were tired but tremendous memories fostered.

I’ve not fallen off the face of the Earth

Rest assured, despite rumors to the contrary, I’ve not fallen off the face of the Earth. It never ceases to amaze me how incredibly chaotic and busy the month of December can be. Tons were accomplished, tons of good food was consumed and tons of great photos were captured. Updates and posts coming as soon as I can get over the hump and find a quite moment.
